Workplace Domestic Abuse Policies

Template domestic abuse policies can be found in the DAWES Good Practice Resource here, which is available in electronic format so that policies can be cut and pasted as required.

Below is a checklist for developing a policy for your organisation. Please contact the DAWES Project directly for further information and support on developing a policy or on good practice in the workplace when staff experience domestic abuse.

Steps for Implementing an Effective Domestic Abuse Policy

  • If using a template policy, ensure it is appropriately adapted for the specific size, structure and ethos of your organisation - Template policies and guidance on sections of a policy are available in the DAWES Good Practice Resource.
  • Consider how the policy may tie into existing policies and procedures and ensure consistency between them.
  • Consider a range of options that can be offered when a member of staff  is experiencing domestic abuse and make it clear that they can be flexibly applied depending on individual circumstances. Make the options realistic given the resources of your specific organisation.
  • Seek feedback on the policy from a local domestic abuse agency, a staff side representative or the DAWES Project.
  • Once the policy is approved ensure all named staff and possible first points of contact (usually line managers, HR and occupational health) are trained in domestic abuse awareness and in making use of the policy with individual staff.
  • Publicise the policy widely; ensuring every member of staff is aware of the policy and how to make use of it. Ensure it is made clear that disclosure will be treated confidentially and sensitively.
  • Integrate a briefing on the policy into the induction programme for new staff.
  • Prominently display publicity information for local domestic abuse support agencies, and produce a statement pledging support for staff who experience domestic abuse and zero tolerance for perpetrators.
  • Ensure the policy is reviewed regularly and managers and HR staff receive update training, and staff new to these positions are trained as a matter of course.
